Meet the Molonglo Valley residents who love being Young at Heart

Each Wednesday morning at 10am the Young at Heart (YAH) group meets at the Denman Village Community Centre; where they meet for a couple of hours to chat over a cuppa. Conversation is relaxed and ranges from family matters to local and international news.

Sometimes the group participates in projects, such as the construction of a Community Vegepod which is located at the Denman Village Community Centre. The Canberra Hospital has also benefited from the industry of several female members of YAH, who have knitted and crocheted a variety of items which they regularly donate to the hospital.

Young at Heart commenced in 2017 with some members participating since its inception. It is open to both singles and couples, and new members are always made welcome. There is no criteria for joining the group, say group members, “you just need to be young at heart”.

For those who have relocated from other suburbs, interstate or overseas, being part of Young at Heart has been a welcome chance to form new friendships. Some strong friendships have been formed over the years, which has seen some members, who have now moved out of the Molonglo Valley, return on a weekly basis to catch up with their friends.

Outside of Wednesday mornings there are lunches, the odd excursion and coffee dates, all coordinated by members of the group. They have also established a WhatsApp group which some utilise in between their weekly catch-ups to share information, coordinate outings or to share photos

“None of us knew each other prior to joining, so we love coming here, meeting people, making friends.”

Being located at the Denman Village Community Centre is convenient, there is a bus stop out the front of the centre for those who may utilise public transport, there is plenty of free parking available within easy walking distance, and it is close to the Denman Village Shopping precinct.

The Young at Heart group meets at Level 1, Denman Village Community Centre, every Wednesday from 10am to 12 noon. Cost to attend is $2 (per person) so drop in and say hello!
