Denman North unveils new art sculpture, Stillness in Movement

Have you ever encountered a piece of art so captivating that it makes you stop in your tracks? Perhaps it was a vibrant public mural or a million-dollar masterpiece in a gallery.

Canberra is known as the art capital of Australia, and Denman Prospect has embraced this reputation wholeheartedly. The community is already home to a stunning array of public art and the collection is growing with the unveiling of a breathtaking new sculpture.

The remarkable sculpture from renowned artist April Pine titled Stillness in Movement is sure to engross and mesmerise all who encounter it.

Located along a central pathway in Denman North, this stunning piece will serve as a place of repose for both residents and visitors. It offers a space to pause, reflect, and take in the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

As you approach the sculpture, you’ll notice how it thoughtfully reflects Denman Prospect’s iconic topography. In particular, Stillness in Movement draws inspiration from the rolling hills of the Brindabella mountains, a feature that Denman Prospect is renowned for showcasing.

“The sculpture is organic and feminine in spirit, appearing to emerge out of the landscape with a soft strength that will captivate everyone passing by,” says Denman Prospect Project Manager, Bridget Bence.

April Pine’s sculptures are known for their emphasis on movement and progression. Stillness in Movement is no exception—her work changes and reacts based on the viewer’s perspective. No matter where or how you choose to approach this piece, it will always appear slightly different, inviting you to return again and again for a fresh experience.

As a Perth-based artist with several pieces already displayed across Canberra (including Windswept depicting Andrew Inglis Clark at Constitution Place), April was selected specifically to create this sculpture for Denman Prospect.

The entire design and development of Denman Prospect is underpinned by a commitment to quality and excellence in urban design, and Stillness in Movement joins a growing collection of impressive public art at Denman Prospect.

Among the other sculpture highlights is Everchange, a giant sphere by artist Benjamin Shine, inspired by the changing colours of the pin oak leaf across Canberra’s four seasons.

Even Denman Prospect’s substations display murals created by Kamilaroi artist Steven Kennedy, which beautifully blend ancient Indigenous culture with contemporary digital art.

As for Denman Prospect’s newest piece, the artist and team are looking forward to seeing the community’s response.

“We knew April would do a good job of identifying and expressing the landscape and topography values here at Denman Prospect through her artwork. She drew inspiration from the surrounding natural beauty of Denman Prospect, and we can’t wait to see how locals respond,” explains Bridget.

“April has been amazing to work with. She is very methodical and considerate in her approach. A number of smaller prototypes were made of Stillness in Movement to test and ensure her idea for Denman Prospect could be executed with confidence and we couldn’t be happier with the end result.”
