When you’re lucky enough to live at Denman Prospect, exercising becomes a ‘choose your own adventure’ sport. Select from indoors, outdoors, water, sunshine, mountain trails or modern gym — and you’re away!
Here, we’ve designed the perfect week for working out the body and nourishing the soul.
Monday
Work out at Club Lime
Located at Denman Village Shops, Club Lime is open 24/7 for complete convenience: work out whenever suits your schedule. The new gym is fitted out with the latest strength, cardio and functional fitness equipment. Start with a warm-up on the stair master and move into some weight reps. Finish by cooling down on the rower or the treadmill. Memberships start from just $16.90/week and provide a workout option for rainy days.
Tuesday
Walk the Namarag-Molonglo River Reserve
The Namarag reserve is a 35-hectare nature space dedicated to restoring native plants and animals on beautiful Ngunnawal country. Designed as a joint initiative with local Aboriginal elders and Parks ACT, it’s the perfect spot to wander through the native bushlands and stop for a picnic along the way. A walking loop with signage and rest stops is located off John Gorton Drive (via Butters Bridge, south of Namarag) and off Coppins Crossing Road (via Whitlam, north of Namarag). On your walk, you’ll catch sweeping views across the Molonglo Corridor as well as habitat restoration areas, bush food and interpretation gardens.
Please note: Dogs are permitted to walk on the tracks on a leash only. No bins are provided so please take your rubbish with you.
Wednesday
Nourish the mind and the body
Increase your strength, balance and flexibility with a yoga session with Jo from 11:11 Health and Wellness. Classes draw upon the ISHTA principles of yoga and Yin Yoga methodologies. You can catch a session Wednesdays from 7.30pm to 8.30pm, and on Saturdays between 4pm and 5pm until 17 December 2022. Classes are run upstairs in the Denman Village Centre’s Bugang Room with plenty of parking directly outside and lift access to the first floor.
Thursday
Build strength with aqua aerobics
Aqua aerobics provide an intense cardiovascular workout and improve heart health. Strengthen and tone muscles with the resistance of water in our stunning pool at Stromlo Leisure Centre. Classes run at 12 noon on Thursdays, so opt to work from home that day and fire up your pool noodle for 45 minutes of fun exercise. For more times head to the Stromlo Leisure Centre website.
Friday
Mountain biking at Stromlo
Pump up the tires on your MTB and head from your house into Stromlo Forest Park for an adrenaline rush: the peak of Stromlo is just 6km from the Denman Prospect town centre. The vision for Denman Prospect has always included providing amenity and inspiration for those who love to bike in nature. Bike trails accessible from Denman include the Centenary Trail, Cotter Pines, Zoo Pines and the Brindabellas.
Please note: It is recommended by Parks ACT to have appropriate gloves, elbow, knee and shin pads, and an Australian Standard Certified helmet. For the harder downhill trails, a full-faced helmet, neck brace, chest and spine protection are recommended. You’ll also need a mountain bike suitable for riding on trails in good working order (front and rear brakes, off-road tyres with adequate tread). For the harder trails a dual suspension or more downhill specific bike is recommended.
Saturday
Road cycle the Uriarra-Cotter loop
Improve the stamina of your legs, lungs and immune system with one of Canberra’s most popular road rides, right on the doorstep of Denman Prospect. A challenging loop even for the experienced rider, the rigorous climbs and fast descents are worth the slog as you enjoy the surrounding views of the Molonglo’s valleys and peaks. The ride is 39km in total and you can dip your feet in the water of the Uriarra River to cool off.
Sunday
Horse riding
At Denman Prospect, we’re just 9 minutes from Cotter Road: home to some of the most stunning equestrian centres in the Canberra region. Here you’ll find The National Equestrian Centre, Stromlo Equestrian Centre and Forest Park Riding and Equitation School. Take a trail ride or sign up for longer-term riding lessons in a group or undertake private lessons. The health benefits of horse riding include increased core strength, cardiovascular health, burning calories, lower blood pressure, and improved decision-making and relaxation.
